Ficino Ensemble Chamber Music Series at the National Concert Hall

​The National Concert Hall presents the Ficino Ensemble Chamber Music Series, a series of four lunchtime recitals to take place in the John Field Room on Thursdays 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th of August 2016 at 1.05pm.

Each concert, devised with its own theme, will feature the Ficino Ensemble in various guises performing chamber music favourites from Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9 and Franz Schubert’s sublime Quintet in C major to George Enescu’s colossal Octet Op. 7 and Olivier Messiaen's Quatuor pour la fin du temps (inspired by the Book of Revelation).

The programme for the opening concert on August 4th entitled Majestic Sonorities features Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9 No. 2 and Richard Strauss’s Piano Quartet in C minor Op. 13 performed by Lance Coburn, piano, Elaine Clark, violin, Nathan Sherman, viola and Ailbhe McDonagh, cello.

On August 11th, in a concert entitled Devastating Beauty , leading Irish pianist Michael McHale alongside Lynda O’Connor, violin, Macdara O Seireadáin, clarinet and Ailbhe McDonagh, cello perform Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps, inspired by the Book of Revelation and written while the composer was a prisoner of war.

On August 18th chamber music fans will have the opportunity to indulge in a performance of Franz Schubert’s sublime Quintet in C major Op. 163, D. 956 performed by Lynda O’Connor and Larissa O’Grady on violin, Nathan Sherman, viola and Ailbhe McDonagh and Sokol Koka on cello. This piece is considered to be one of the greatest chamber music works ever written.

In the fourth and final concert in the series entitled Rhythm, Dance and Folk Melodies on August 25th Mia Cooper,Lynda O’Connor, Orla Ní Bhraoin, Larissa O’Grady on violin, together with Nathan Sherman and David Kenny on viola and Ailbhe McDonagh and Adrian Mantu on cello perform a pair of works guaranteed to excite: Erwin Schulhoff’s brilliant set of dances for string quartet, and George Enescu’s colossal Octet Op. 7 bringing the series to a fitting end.
